Snowy Weekend in NYC with Kyler

The city was all decked out for the holidays.  It was exciting sitting on the lap of the most famous Santa at Macy's, walking in the snow in Central Park, taking the subway, going to Clintons office.

Colin's Keynote Rocks the Room

I was just so proud of Colin as he took the stage as a keynote speaker for Focus Training for a DECA conference.  He just had more than a thousand high school kids in the palm of his hand when he took center stage. He also ran large break out sessions doing leadership training.

New York City with Kyler

Kyler landed an incredible opportunity to work as an intern for the Clinton Foundation in New York city for 4 months in the fall..  She took the time off of college at Western Washington University to do volunteer and get credit for the experience.  I went to visit her for  a long weekend.  We walked around the city, saw Central Park, met Peter Yarrow at FAO Schwarz toys, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and saw a play.  It was a fantastic weekend!

Autumn Cruising

Port Orchard was the destination this past weekend for the Seattle Singles Yacht Club overnight and Chowderfest. It was the perfect fall weekend... foggy and overcast in the morning with the warm sun burning it off each afternoon. It was a crispy fall weekend in the 60's. The "Rophy" just couldn't wait to burst through the locks out into Puget Sound.... the woman at the help was a bit reluctant... but ventured forth all the while asking herself... "Why has it been so long since I've felt the salty breeze against my skin on this boat?!"
I'm coming up on the two year anniversary since I had the Rophy and I am grateful every day. I try to get it out at least twice or more a month all year long. I feel confident taking it out but sometimes those little voices in my head question myself too much.
Corn chowder was my contribution without any milk or cream... I just loved it...
The "Cottage Chowder" was made by Gary with Razor Clams dug at the ocean when a group of us went to the Cottage for a weekend during clam digging!
There must have been almost 20 boats from the yacht club there... each with crew! We had so much fun. I love the friends I have made over the years and this weekend.
There was a lot of fog... I went on Friday when it was clear. This is what it was like before all the boats arrived... you can see Bremerton in the background. Rophy is right there in the middle.
This is a photo Gary took from our dock of the sub in the inlet Saturday afternoon. That is Bremerton across the water.

Taking to the wind

Saturday afternoon the Seattle Singles Yacht held the annual yacht race to benefit Northwest Harvest food bank. I had the opportunity to fly in a Cessna plane over the race with the photographer for two hours. It took about 15 minutes before I could breathe after take-off!

Though I did go in a float plane several times this summer to the islands, I am have not lost the white knuckle feeling! The plane flew as low as 300 feet over the boats. It was quite windy which was breathtaking for most of those racing. Every time the window of the plane opened to take pictures the wind rushed in as we were going over 100 mph.

What an awesome sight watching the graceful sailboats using the power of the wind to cut through the water! I watched as they heeled, came about and put up spinnakers.
These photos are not nearly as great as the originals by the photographer!

That night I was the auctioneer for the live auction which added to the tens of thousands of dollars the club donated to the food bank.

I have never felt so HIGH!

A trip to the dentist has never been this fun before!

Ok... I admit it that I am one of those people that cries in that recliner even during a cleaning. But, today I had my first experience with Nitrous commonly called Laughing Gas. Why did it take so long! This product was made for me! The ugly plastic nose thing is put across my face... I am breathing deeply that crisp cool odorless gas with headphones on listening to Rescue Blues by Ryan Adam... " Everybody wants you to be special... And everybody wants you to be high" and in no time I was high. For those of you that know me.... I avoid that kind of feeling.. two glasses of a sweet wine is my limit.
So I'm in a prone position with rose colored glasses (maybe they were and maybe they weren't rose colored... my imagination was running wild). I was in my own little world. I started laughing... just laughing out loud... with tears in my eyes.. can the dentist really be this kind of trip? Then I was talking, of course.. and with the headphones and the gas.. I had to speak loudly... woke up all the other patients in the place.. remember when there were actual walls between patients. Now they have you face a window and let you think you are alone. Just cause I was talking doesn't mean anyone could understand me. I had a rubber damn in my mouth. Ugh.. doesn't that even just sound awful? And... mumble... yep.. that is what I did... mumble and gurgle.

The dentist, Jeff, who I am sure we are on first name basis now since he is only a tad older than my son, looks deep into my eyes.. with the wierdest glasses. He speaks directly to me.. as the Beatles Lyrics "Love Love Love" resound in my head. I was all his...

He drilled and scraped. That old filling was outta there. Good riddin's to that mercury... I always knew the temperature with my own thermometer in there! Soon when I open my mouth which I do often, my teeth will all be white.

The time seemed to go by so quickly...

Tony Bennett started crooning... as Jeff started pulling out the dental floss....
"Ive got the world on a string
I'm sitting on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
What a world, what a life - I'm in love.

Life's a wonderful thing
As long as I hold the string
Id be a silly so-and-so
If I should ever let her go"

and then I heard the words.. "time to turn off the gas." I wanted to cry ... it was all like a dream. I didn't remember an experience at the dentist quite like that.

Kate Visits.. Flowers at the Locks Garden

My sister, Andrea, suggested her friend, Kate, visit when she was in town from Boston. I so enjoyed the time we spent together. She has such a wonderful energy... and a quietly powerful spirit. I learned so much about my sister from one of her great friends! The trumpet flowers at the locks are spectacular.

Chinooks for Dinner

Dinner at Chinooks with Bob and Colin and Kyler. Josh, Kyler's boyfriend was also with us! So fun!

Learning to lead Architectural Tours

This is Chris King leading a skyscraper walking tour for the Seattle Architecture Foundation.  I was along on this tour learning to lead tours.  He led the first tour I took which got me interested in leading tours.
Chris since passed away and left some money to the Foundation which had an impact on expanding their programs.  Here I am leading a tour in front of the Rainier Tower on 5th Ave in Seattle.

Kyler is off to NYC

With one year left of college, Kyler decided to take the fall quarter and experience an internship. When reading the French newspaper, La Monde, she learned about the Clinton Foundation. A great cover letter, two outstanding references and off went her application. She was accepted and was on her way to NYC. She will work out of the Clinton Foundation offices in Harlem... for those of us baby boomers... the idea of one of our kids working in Harlem makes us cringe... but they say it is different today! Kyler worked alongside HR coordinating events and work for the other interns. Her computer skills came in handy as she worked on data for the foundation.

Flying to Canada on a Floatplane

Every morning and evening float planes from Kenmore Air take off and land in front of my house on Lake Washington.  I took a flight to the San Juans this summer and I so wanted to share the excitement of a flight with Colin and Kyler.  Labor Day weekend we flew from Kenmore to Lake Union and then from there to Victoria.  I did take lots of photos from the air.  We had such a great time!
